During the Spanish-American War, she was captured by the U.S. lighthouse tender \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eMangrove\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e in 1898, then assigned to the U.S. Army as a troop transport. She was converted in Brooklyn for cable-laying work and sent toward the Philippines to support Army communications after the war.
