Based on military records this carbine would have been originally issued to either 1st New York Mounted Rifles or the 22nd NY Cavalry according to serial number.

The Confederate Military (Desperate for additional arms) started a program to capture, rearsenal and reuse union weapons. These weapons received distinct markings depending on the Ordnance Inspector responsible for the reconditioning of the weapon.

This Sharps Carbine is marked with the “Z” marking below the action on the stock of the firearm. This marking distinction is the final inspection marking of Confederate Ordnance inspector Louis Zimmer of Richmond Va. These markings would be made after Union Stock markings were sanded off as is correct on this carbine. It also appears the sling ring was replaced during the arsenal refurb.

Only issue I see is that the carbine is missing the sight “riser”.

The Initials “PK” can be found carved into the stock. This was a common practice of Confederate Soldiers marking their weapons.
