Offered here is an original U.S. Model of 1917 bolt-action rifle manufactured by Winchester, one of the primary service rifles used by American forces during the First World War.

The rifle is marked:

“U.S. Model of 1917 – Winchester”

indicating manufacture by the Winchester Repeating Arms Company under U.S. military contract. The Model 1917 was based on the British Pattern 1914 Enfield rifle and was adapted by the United States for the .30-06 Springfield cartridge after America entered World War I in 1917.

Despite the Springfield Model 1903 being the official U.S. service rifle, the Model 1917 became the most widely issued American rifle of World War I, with roughly two-thirds of U.S. troops in France carrying the M1917. It was manufactured by three major contractors:

• Winchester

• Remington

• Eddystone

This example appears to be an arsenal reworked rifle, a common occurrence for U.S. military arms that remained in service through later training and reserve use. Arsenal rebuilds often resulted in rifles with mixed manufacturer components, as worn parts were replaced during refurbishment.

Features include:

• Winchester Model of 1917 bolt-action rifle

• Chambered in .30-06 Springfield

• Military walnut stock

• Five-round internal magazine

• Robust Mauser-style action with dual locking lugs

• Military ladder rear sight and protected front sight

• Arsenal service rebuild configuration

The Model 1917 rifle gained a strong reputation for durability, reliability, and accuracy. Its longer sight radius and strong action made it well-suited for battlefield conditions, and it remained in use for training and reserve units for many years after World War I.

This rifle remains in very good overall condition for a military service arm over a century old. The metal surfaces retain a pleasing military finish with light handling wear, while the walnut stock shows honest service marks consistent with military use.

The Model 1917 remains a highly collectible U.S. military rifle and an important part of America’s First World War military history.
