1864 Confederate States of America $5 Note & Norfolk, Virginia Oath of Allegiance Document Display
Outstanding Civil War display featuring an original Confederate States of America $5 note dated February 17, 1864, paired with an original Provost Marshal’s Office Oath and Parole certificate from Norfolk, Virginia dated September 29, 1864.
The Confederate note is the popular Richmond issue featuring the Tennessee State Capitol vignette and portrait of C.G. Memminger, Confederate Secretary of the Treasury. The note retains strong eye appeal with clear signatures, serial numbering, and attractive overall presentation.
Accompanying the note is an original Union-issued Provost Marshal’s Office certificate documenting that Mrs. Margaret Gray of Wilber’s Point, Virginia subscribed to the oath and parole required by General Orders after residing within Confederate territory. Such documents provide a fascinating glimpse into civilian life and Reconstruction-era loyalty procedures during the Civil War.
This framed grouping combines Confederate currency with an identified wartime loyalty document from occupied Virginia, creating an attractive and historically significant Civil War display.
Condition is consistent with age, including folds, handling wear, toning, and minor imperfections expected from original Civil War paper artifacts. Sold as displayed.
