French Second Empire “Sergent de Ville” Sword – Paris Police / Municipal Guard – Circa 1852–1870
Scarce French Second Empire era sword believed to be associated with the Paris municipal police or “Sergent de Ville” forces during the reign of Napoleon III. Features an elegant brass hilt with decorative floral motifs cast into the grip, pronounced knuckle bow, and a stepped pommel. The straight double-fullered blade retains attractive age patina with visible original profile and period finish.
These distinctive sidearms were carried by municipal authorities, police officials, and urban security personnel during the mid-19th century French Second Empire period. The design combines military influence with civic styling and represents an increasingly collectible niche of French law enforcement and administrative militaria.
The sword remains in solid untouched condition with an attractive aged brass patina throughout. The blade shows honest age wear and oxidation from long-term storage while remaining structurally sound. Guard is stamped with inventory or rack markings. An uncommon and visually appealing Second Empire French edged weapon.
