Original German WWI Honor Cross w/ Swords-Combatant Award
Original German WWI Honor Cross w/ Swords-Combatant Award
An original German World War I Honor Cross with Swords (Ehrenkreuz des Weltkrieges 1914–1918), commonly known as the Hindenburg Cross. Instituted in 1934 by President Paul von Hindenburg, this decoration was awarded to veterans who honorably served during the First World War. The version featuring crossed swords was presented specifically to front-line combat veterans, making it the most sought-after variant of the award.
The medal features the classic bronze-finished cross pattée with a central oak leaf wreath surrounding the dates “1914–1918”, symbolizing Germany’s participation in the Great War. Crossed swords beneath the wreath identify the recipient as a combat veteran who served at the front.
This example retains a pleasing original patina and crisp detail throughout. The suspension ring remains intact, making it an excellent candidate for display, restoration with the correct ribbon, or inclusion in a German Imperial or Third Reich medal collection.
