Original WWII U.S. Army Pocket Guide to Germany 1944 War Dept. Occupation Manual
Original 1944 U.S. Army “Pocket Guide to Germany”, prepared by the Army Information Branch, Information and Education Division, Army Service Forces and printed by the U.S. Government Printing Office for American servicemen preparing to enter Germany during the final stages of World War II.
These compact field guides were distributed to U.S. soldiers before the Allied invasion and occupation of Germany. Designed to fit easily into a uniform pocket, they provided practical information on German history, customs, language, geography, currency, military occupation duties, and expected interactions with the civilian population.
One of the most recognizable features of this edition is the printed cover notice reminding soldiers of the Army’s Non-Fraternization Policy, stating:
“Keep faith with the American soldiers who have died to eliminate the German warmakers. DO NOT FRATERNIZE.”
The guide contains numerous sections including:
- Your Job in Germany
- Security and Occupation Duties
- German History and Political Background
- Why the Allies Were Fighting Germany
- German Customs and Society
- Geography and Climate
- Currency, Weights, and Measures
- German Language Guide and Useful Phrases
Unlike ordinary travel guides, this publication provides a fascinating firsthand look at how the U.S. Army prepared its troops for the occupation of defeated Germany. Today it remains one of the most sought-after U.S. Army pocket guides because of its historical significance and its insight into Allied occupation policy.
Published by the U.S. Government Printing Office in 1944, this original wartime edition remains complete with its softcover binding and period contents.
Condition is very good overall with light handling and storage wear consistent with age. The binding remains secure, pages are clean and complete, and the cover retains strong color and legibility. An excellent example for collectors of WWII U.S. militaria, occupation history, military field manuals, and wartime paper ephemera.
