Original World War II U.S. Army “Pocket Guide to Paris and Cities of Northern France,” prepared by the Army Information Branch, Information and Education Division, Army Service Forces, United States Army and issued by the War Department, Washington, D.C.

These compact pocket guides were produced for American servicemen preparing to enter liberated France during the closing stages of World War II. Designed to fit easily into a uniform pocket, they provided practical information on local customs, currency, transportation, history, pronunciation, landmarks, and important cities throughout northern France, helping soldiers navigate unfamiliar territory during military operations and occupation duty.

One of the most fascinating sections is the introductory warning explaining that many of the cities described had been bombed, shelled, looted, or occupied during the war and that conditions on the ground might differ dramatically from the information printed in the guide. This offers a unique contemporary perspective from the final months of WWII.

The guide includes:

  • Historical background on Paris and Northern France
  • City maps and orientation information
  • Cultural customs and etiquette
  • Transportation and travel information
  • Pronunciation guides
  • Important landmarks and monuments
  • Practical advice prepared specifically for U.S. military personnel

These official War Department guides have become increasingly collectible as tangible artifacts carried by American soldiers during the liberation of Europe. They are sought after by collectors of WWII militaria, D-Day and liberation history, military reference material, and wartime paper ephemera.

Condition is very good overall with light handling and storage wear consistent with age. Binding remains solid, pages are clean and complete, and the guide displays very well.

A desirable original piece of World War II U.S. military history that illustrates the preparation and education provided to American troops before entering France.
