Designers L. Ray Crittendon and William Gail Jr. created the Model 760 as a modern pump rifle capable of handling high-velocity spitzer-bullet cartridges. Key features included:
A detachable box magazine (usually 4-round capacity).
Twin action bars for smooth operation.
A rotating bolt with multiple lugs that locked into the barrel extension, providing a strong lockup and allowing the receiver to be lighter while supporting powerful rounds (unlike the earlier Model 141).
A free-floating 22-inch barrel (standard rifle version; carbines had 18.5 inches).
Overall length around 42.5–42.75 inches, weight about 7–7.5 lbs.
It was marketed as a fast-handling hunting rifle, especially popular in states restricting semiautomatic rifles for big game. Many hunters paired it with the Model 870 shotgun due to the similar pump action. The .30-06 Springfield was by far the most common chambering (~50% of production), followed by .270 Winchester. The .243 Winchester was offered from the mid-1950s through the end of production and accounted for a solid portion of sales (around 10% overall for similar calibers in the lineup).
