U.S. Model 1872 Cavalry Officer’s Saber – Indian Wars Era – J.H. Wilson, Philadelphia
U.S. Model 1872 Cavalry Officer’s Saber – Indian Wars Era – J.H. Wilson, Philadelphia
Original U.S. Model 1872 Cavalry Officer’s Saber dating to the Indian Wars period and retailed by J.H. Wilson of Philadelphia. Features the distinctive pierced brass guard associated with the Model 1872 pattern, sharkskin grip with twisted wire wrap, and ornate etched blade with patriotic motifs including “U.S.” markings and decorative foliate scrollwork. The ricasso is marked “J.H. Wilson Phila. PA,” a desirable Philadelphia military outfitter and retailer.
The Model 1872 saber was carried by U.S. cavalry officers during the post-Civil War frontier and Indian Wars era and represents one of the final classic cavalry saber patterns adopted by the United States military. These officer-grade examples were privately purchased and often featured higher-quality etched blades and decorative gilt hilts.
This example retains excellent visual appeal with a bright etched blade showing strong surviving detail. The hilt retains traces of original gilt finish with attractive age patina throughout, while the sharkskin grip and wire wrap remain largely intact. Includes original steel scabbard with suspension rings showing honest age and oxidation. A highly displayable Indian Wars era U.S. officer’s saber.
