Vintage Smith & Wesson .22/32 Pre-Model .22 LR Revolver - Pre-1935 J Frame Classic
Vintage Smith & Wesson .22/32 Pre-Model .22 LR Revolver - Pre-1935 J Frame Classic
For sale: Rare, early-production Smith & Wesson .22 Long Rifle revolver, built on the classic I-Frame (the direct predecessor to the modern J-Frame). This pre-1935 Hand Ejector is an ancestor to the legendary .22/32 Kit Gun and Target models—introduced around 1911 as the .22/32 Heavy-Frame Target, with shorter-barreled “Kit Gun” versions emerging in the mid-1930s for outdoorsmen, fishermen, and plinkers.
• Caliber: .22 LR (handles .22 Short, Long, and Long Rifle reliably)
• Barrel Length: Approximately 4-6 inches (compact and balanced for carry or target use)
• Capacity: 6 rounds
• Action: Double-action/single-action swing-out cylinder Hand Ejector
• Finish: Blued steel (attractive aged patina with light handling marks and honest wear—no heavy corrosion or abuse visible)
• Sights: Fixed front blade, rear notch (classic period-correct setup for quick acquisition)
• Grips: Checkered walnut with diamond escutcheons (original-style, comfortable and secure)
• Condition: Very good for a 90+ year-old example—tight lockup, smooth action, clean bore and chambers (appears mechanically sound and shootable). Minor cosmetic patina on frame, barrel, and cylinder consistent with vintage use, but no functional concerns.
These early .22/32 revolvers were Smith & Wesson’s first dedicated rimfire Hand Ejectors, built tough on the .32-sized I-Frame for superior accuracy and durability compared to lesser pocket pistols of the era. Highly collectible as pre-WWII pieces, they’re fun for plinking, small game, or as a historical link to modern J-Frame .22s like the Model 34/43/317. Often praised for their reliability and balance—true classics that still perform today.
