The Winchester Model 1873, chambered in .44-40, is one of the most iconic firearms in American history, often called "The Gun That Won the West." Introduced by Winchester Repeating Arms Company in 1873, it was designed by John Moses Browning and others as an improvement over earlier lever-action rifles like the Henry and Winchester Model 1866.

The .44-40 cartridge (also known as .44 WCF, Winchester Center Fire) was a key innovation, offering a powerful, versatile round suitable for both rifles and revolvers, which made it popular among frontiersmen, lawmen, and outlaws. The Model 1873 was a lever-action rifle with a tubular magazine, typically holding 15 rounds in the rifle configuration. Its reliability, rapid fire, and ease of use made it a favorite for hunting, self-defense, and combat in the American West.

Over 720,000 units were produced between 1873 and 1919, with various configurations including rifles, carbines, and muskets. Its cultural impact is immense, appearing in countless Western films and symbolizing the rugged individualism of the era. Notable users included Buffalo Bill Cody and likely figures like Billy the Kid. The rifle’s design influenced later firearms, and its legacy endures in modern reproductions and cowboy action shooting.

The barrel and magazine tube have been shortened to 18" making this about the same length as a standard shortened rifle.

Bore is in very good condition with only slight frosting visible.
