WWI British Brodie Mk I Steel Helmet – Named “P. Gilbert” – Original Liner
WWI British Brodie Mk I Steel Helmet – Named “P. Gilbert” – Original Liner
Offered here is an original World War I British Brodie Mark I steel helmet, complete with its period liner and leather chinstrap.
Introduced in 1916, the Brodie helmet became the standard combat helmet of British and Commonwealth forces during the First World War. Its distinctive shallow dome and wide brim were designed to protect soldiers from falling shrapnel in trench warfare and quickly became one of the most recognizable helmets of the Great War.
This example retains its original steel shell with an excellent aged wartime patina, showing honest service wear consistent with over a century of history.
The helmet retains its original liner assembly, including the oilcloth liner band, felt pad, and suspension netting. The leather chinstrap remains present and is marked “P. Gilbert,” believed to be the name of the soldier who wore the helmet. Named examples like this add a personal connection to the history of the piece and are always desirable among collectors.
Overall, this is a very honest, untouched WWI Brodie helmet, perfect for display in a First World War collection.
