WWI British Tank Crew “Splatter Mask” – Leather & Chainmail – Original Royal Tank Corps
WWI British Tank Crew “Splatter Mask” – Leather & Chainmail – Original Royal Tank Corps
Original First World War British tank crew anti-splatter mask, dating to circa 1917–1918, used by early Royal Tank Corps crews during the introduction of armored warfare.
This iconic and increasingly scarce piece was designed to protect tank operators from spalling (metal fragments), shrapnel, and hot debris inside early British tanks when struck by enemy fire. The mask features a formed steel face plate wrapped in original brown leather, with horizontal slotted eye guards and a full chainmail curtain to shield the lower face and neck.
Features:
- Original WWI British issue tank crew mask
- Steel face plate with leather covering
- Slotted steel eye guards for visibility and protection
- Intact chainmail lower curtain (key value component)
- Side attachment points and fittings present
- Classic “combat-used” patina with honest age and wear
Condition:
Very good overall for a WWI piece. The leather retains strong character with expected wear and age toning. The chainmail skirt is intact and well-preserved, which is critical for collector value. Eye guards remain in place. Shows authentic field wear consistent with use.
(No modern reproduction—this is a genuine period example.)
Historical Significance:
Among the most recognizable artifacts of early armored warfare, these masks were issued to British tank crews operating in harsh and dangerous conditions on the Western Front. Due to their limited production and hard use, surviving originals are increasingly difficult to find, especially in this level of completeness.
Collector Notes:
- Highly desirable WWI armored warfare item
- Excellent display piece for military collections or museums
- Strong crossover appeal (WWI, armor, trench warfare, unusual gear)
