An outstanding original World War I U.S. Army M1912 officer’s service coat, privately tailored by the renowned Hart, Schaffner & Marx of Chicago. During America’s involvement in the First World War, Hart, Schaffner & Marx was one of the country’s premier military tailors, producing high-quality officer uniforms that far exceeded standard issue garments in fit and craftsmanship.
This uniform represents a Second Lieutenant of Infantry assigned to the 89th Infantry Division (“Middle West Division”), one of the American Expeditionary Forces divisions that saw combat in France during the St. Mihiel and Meuse-Argonne offensives.

The 89th Division was organized primarily from Midwestern states and deployed to France in 1918. The division fought with distinction during the St. Mihiel Offensive and the Meuse-Argonne Offensive, remaining in Europe after the Armistice as part of the Army of Occupation before returning home in 1919. Uniforms identified to the 89th Division are highly desirable among collectors of American Expeditionary Forces material.
The private tailoring by Hart, Schaffner & Marx adds significantly to the coat’s appeal. Officer uniforms from respected civilian makers are sought after for their superior quality and historical significance, reflecting the fact that U.S. officers were expected to purchase their own uniforms during the First World War.
Condition
Very good original condition for its age, displaying honest service wear consistent with a century-old military uniform. The wool remains solid with expected scattered wear and light staining from use and storage. The insignia present well and contribute to an attractive display.
A scarce and desirable original WWI officer’s uniform representing both one of America’s most respected military outfitters and an officer of the famed 89th Infantry Division.
