Original French Revolutionary-era paper currency note, known as an “Assignat,” issued during the height of the French Revolution. This example is a 10 Sous denomination bearing the inscription “Domaines Nationaux” and dated under the Law of May 23, 1793 (Loi du 23 Mai 1793).

Assignats were among the earliest forms of French paper money and were initially backed by lands confiscated from the Church and Crown. These notes circulated during one of the most turbulent periods in French history, including the era of the Reign of Terror and the First French Republic.

This note features the classic revolutionary design with decorative border elements, period signatures, and anti-counterfeiting warnings, including the statement that counterfeiters faced death. The reverse displays embossed security markings visible in the paper. Original examples such as this are highly collectible and represent a tangible artifact from the French Revolution.

Condition:
Very good antique condition for its age, with strong printing, visible signatures, light age toning, expected folds from circulation, and embossed security features present. No major losses or repairs noted.
