Presenting a rare and historically significant 1895 Chilean Mauser rifle, also known as the Fusil Mauser Chileno Modelo 1895. This rifle was manufactured by Ludwig Loewe & Co. in Berlin as part of a contract for the Chilean army in the late 19th century. The receiver is marked with the Loewe Berlin logo and features the Chilean crest, displaying a huemul, a condor, and the motto “Por la Razón o la Fuerza” (By Reason or by Force), symbolizing its proud heritage. The serial number A 829 places this rifle in the early production run, likely dating it to 1895, making it one of the first rifles produced for this contract.

Chambered in its original 7×57mm Mauser caliber, this rifle retains its historical authenticity. The Model 1895 Mauser was renowned for its reliability and the effectiveness of the 7×57mm cartridge, which proved itself in conflicts like the Spanish-American War of 1898. This rifle would have been a mainstay of the Chilean military during a period of regional tension with Argentina, known as the South American arms race.

Condition:

This 1895 Chilean Mauser is in good condition for its age, reflecting its historical use while remaining well-preserved. The wood stock has a deep patina with minor scratches and dings, consistent with a rifle that has seen service but has been cared for. The metal components exhibit a mix of original bluing and natural patina, with light surface wear around the receiver and barrel. The Chilean crest and Loewe markings remain legible, adding to its collectible appeal. All visible serial numbers match at A 829, confirming its originality and increasing its value as a fully intact piece.

Historical Significance:

The Model 1895 Mauser was adopted by Chile in the late 19th century, with over 80,000 rifles delivered between 1895 and 1900. Manufactured by Loewe Berlin until 1896, production later transitioned to DWM (Deutsche Waffen und Munitionsfabriken). This early Loewe example, with its “A” block serial number, represents the beginning of Chile’s adoption of modern bolt-action rifles. The low serial number A 829 places it among the first rifles produced, adding to its rarity and historical value. These rifles saw use in regional conflicts, including the Chilean Civil War of 1891 and the War of the Pacific. The 7×57mm Mauser cartridge was highly effective, and some Chilean Mausers were later used in the Mexican Revolution by both sides, adding to their historical legacy.

Collector’s Notes:

This 1895 Chilean Mauser is a prized addition to any collection of military antiques, particularly for enthusiasts of South American firearms or Mauser history. The combination of its Loewe Berlin manufacture, original 7×57mm chambering, early serial number, and matching numbers makes it a standout piece. The low serial number A 829, within the first 1,000 rifles of the “A” block, enhances its rarity, as many surviving examples from this contract have mismatched parts, conversions to other calibers (like 7.62×51mm NATO), or significant wear. This rifle’s intact condition and early production status make it a rare find for serious collectors.
