Description
Offered is an original Imperial Japanese 1 Yen banknote (Pick P-54a) issued during the late Meiji period and continuing into the Taishō era.
The front of the note features a detailed portrait of a classical Japanese scholar figure believed to represent Takenouchi no Sukune, a legendary statesman often used on early Japanese currency. Above the portrait is the Imperial chrysanthemum crest, symbol of the Japanese emperor.
The design includes ornate scrollwork borders, traditional Japanese characters, and red official seals typical of early Bank of Japan issues.
The reverse depicts a traditional Shinto shrine structure, rendered in a reddish ink tone with decorative cloud-style flourishes.
These notes were printed during Japan’s modernization period and circulated prior to and during the early 20th century. They remain popular with world currency collectors and WWII-era collectors due to their imperial symbolism and classic engraved design.
