1934 German Referendum Commemorative Tinnie Badge
1934 German Referendum Commemorative Tinnie Badge
Offered here is an original 1934 German Saar plebiscite commemorative tinnie issued in connection with the campaign surrounding the return of the Saar region to Germany. The front features a German national eagle above a swastika, with two clasped hands symbolizing the reunification of the Saar with Germany. Around the border appears the inscription “Deutsch ist die Saar” (“The Saar is German”), while the lower portion bears the patriotic slogan “Des Deutschen Ehre ist die Treue” (“A German’s honor is loyalty”) along with the date 1934.
Constructed of stamped metal with a dark bronze-toned finish, this badge retains its original pin-back attachment. The reverse shows period construction and age-related oxidation consistent with authentic examples from the era.
These commemorative tinnies were sold and worn during political rallies, public events, and fundraising activities leading up to the January 1935 Saar referendum, in which the population voted overwhelmingly to rejoin Germany.
