The barrel code "BH" on a Remington Model 760 Carbine indicates it was manufactured in January 1961.

Remington stamped two-letter date codes on the left side of the barrel (just forward of the receiver) for firearms made after 1921. The first letter represents the month:

B = January

The second letter represents the year:

H = 1961

The Remington Model 760 Gamemaster Carbine in .30-06 Springfield from 1961 is a classic pump-action hunting rifle.

Key Specs and Features:

Action: Pump (slide-action) with a rotating bolt head and twin action bars for reliable cycling.

Barrel: 18.5 inches (carbine length, often called the 760C or "Pennsylvania Carbine").

Overall Length: About 39 inches; Weight: 7–7.25 lbs—handy for thick woods or brush hunting.

Capacity: Detachable box magazine (4+1 standard; some aftermarket 10-round options exist).

Sights: Typically open iron sights (adjustable rear); many drilled/tapped for scopes.

Stock: Walnut (plain or checkered pistol grip, depending on grade like ADL or CDL "Five Diamond").

Finish: Blued steel.

Production Details:

The full 760 ran 1952–1981 (1M+ made), but carbines started ~1960 (total ~13,991 across calibers, with .30-06 popular).

1961 Confirmation: Look for barrel date code "H" (left side near receiver, e.g., "H" for 1961; month is first letter like "A–X"). Serial likely 100,000–541,000 range.

CDL Grade (1961–63): Checkered stock, pistol grip cap—rarer (~518 made).
