Antique Bronze Signal Cannon “Thunder Mug” – Maritime / Plantation Alarm Cannon
Antique Bronze Signal Cannon “Thunder Mug” – Maritime / Plantation Alarm Cannon
Interesting antique bronze signal cannon commonly referred to as a “Thunder Mug” or signal cannon. These small bronze cannons were used aboard ships, plantations, estates, and industrial facilities during the 18th and 19th centuries to signal mealtimes, work shifts, celebrations, arrivals, and special occasions.
This example features a heavy cast bronze body with an integral handle, flared base, and central powder chamber. The bronze has developed an attractive untouched dark patina with areas of natural verdigris from age and storage.
Thunder mugs were loaded with a small black powder charge and discharged to create a loud report rather than fire a projectile. They were widely used throughout the United States and Europe and remain popular collectibles today due to their unusual appearance and decorative display value.
Features:
- Solid cast bronze construction
- Integral cast handle
- Attractive untouched aged patina
- Traditional thunder mug / signal cannon form
- Decorative maritime and early American appeal
- Stable display condition
- Excellent conversation piece for military, maritime, or Americana collections
Condition:
Good antique condition showing age, handling wear, oxidation, and natural verdigris. No major cracks or repairs observed. Displays exceptionally well.
Historical Note:
Signal cannons of this style were often found on ships, plantations, large estates, factories, and military installations where a loud audible signal was needed before modern communications became available.
