The Smith & Wesson 3rd Model .38 Double Action (often called the .38 Perfected Model in some references, but more commonly just the "3rd Model .38 DA Top-Break") is a top-break revolver produced from 1884 to 1895.
Key Specifications & Features
Caliber: .38 S&W (not .38 Special – important difference; .38 S&W is a shorter, slightly larger-diameter cartridge with lower pressure)
Action: Double-action top-break, automatic simultaneous ejection
Barrel lengths: Most common are 3¼", 4", 5", and 6". 3¼" and 4" are the most frequently encountered today.
Frame: Small “I-frame” size (same frame later used for the .38 Regulation Police and early .38/32 Terrier)
Capacity: 5 rounds
Finish: Almost always nickel (blue is rare and commands a premium)
Grips: Hard rubber with checkering and S&W monogram (walnut or mother-of-pearl are very rare factory options)
Serial range: Approx. 119 001 – 322 700 (1895 last year)
Distinguishing features compared to earlier models:
Trigger guard is separate piece screwed to the frame (1st & 2nd Models had integral trigger guard)
Side-plate is on the left side (earlier models had it on the right)
Frame latch is a simple spring-loaded button instead of the earlier T-shaped latch.
