Original antique Winchester Model 1886 lever-action rifle chambered in the desirable .45-90 Winchester Center Fire cartridge. Manufactured in 1894, this rifle features a distinctive 26-inch half-octagon, half-round barrel configuration, a special-order feature that makes it particularly interesting to Winchester collectors.

Designed by John Moses Browning and introduced in 1886, the Winchester Model 1886 was one of the strongest and most respected lever-action rifles of the black-powder era. Built to accommodate larger cartridges than earlier Winchester models, the 1886 became a favorite among big-game hunters, outdoorsmen, and frontier riflemen. The powerful .45-90 WCF chambering was especially well suited to hunting large North American game.

This example features a 26-inch barrel with an octagonal rear section transitioning to a round forward section, full-length tubular magazine, traditional lever-action mechanism, exposed hammer, and walnut stock and forearm. The combination of the .45-90 chambering and special-order barrel configuration makes this an attractive example of Winchester’s late-19th-century craftsmanship.

The rifle displays an appealing, naturally aged appearance with substantial original character. The metal surfaces have developed an even brown and gray patina with scattered oxidation and finish wear consistent with its age. The walnut furniture shows handling marks, scratches, and wear from more than 130 years of existence, while retaining an attractive overall appearance.

The bore is in good shootable condition.

The barrel is marked “.45-90 W.C.F.”, and the upper tang carries the original “MODEL 1886” designation. Period Winchester patent markings are also present.

An excellent piece of American firearms history representing the height of Winchester’s large-frame lever-action development. A desirable antique rifle with an uncommon barrel configuration and classic big-bore chambering.
