Arisaka Type 38 Carbine
Arisaka Type 38 Carbine
These are classic Imperial Japanese military firearms from the early 20th century, adopted in 1905 (the 38th year of Emperor Meiji's reign, hence "Type 38").
Key Specs and Features
Caliber: 6.5×50mmSR Arisaka – a rimmed, bottlenecked cartridge known for low recoil, good accuracy, and flat trajectory, though considered underpowered compared to later 7.7mm rounds by some during WWII.
Action: Bolt-action, Mauser-inspired turn-bolt with a strong, reliable design. It uses 5-round stripper clip-loaded internal box magazine.
Barrel length: Typically around 19.2 inches (487 mm) for the true carbine version.
Overall length: About 38 inches (966 mm).
Weight: Roughly 7.3 lbs (3.3 kg) unloaded – light and handy.
Purpose: Designed for cavalry, engineers, artillery crews, and other support roles where a full-length rifle (over 50 inches) was cumbersome. It lacks provisions for a standard bayonet lug (unlike the infantry rifle version), though some carbines were modified.
Production: Made at various arsenals like Koishikawa (Tokyo), Nagoya, Kokura, etc., from around 1906 through WWII. Markings on the receiver (top for the chrysanthemum "mum" imperial property stamp, and often arsenal symbols like stacked cannonballs/cloverleaf for Tokyo)
