Austria-Hungarian Emperor Franz Joseph I 1848-1908 Jubilee Cross Medal-Original Tri-Fold Ribbon

Original Austro-Hungarian 1908 Jubilee Cross (Jubiläumskreuz 1848–1908) commemorating the 60th anniversary of the reign of Emperor Franz Joseph I.

The decoration was instituted in 1908 by Emperor Franz Joseph to commemorate his accession to the throne in 1848 and sixty years of rule over the Habsburg monarchy.

The medal features a gilt-colored cross superimposed over a laurel wreath. At the center of the obverse is a circular portrait medallion depicting Emperor Franz Joseph I in profile. The reverse is characteristically simple and bears the dates “1848 / 1908,” commemorating the emperor’s sixty-year jubilee.

This example retains its attractive red-and-white triangular Austro-Hungarian style ribbon, folded in the distinctive tri-fold configuration commonly encountered on Austrian decorations. The ribbon shows age, handling wear, minor staining and discoloration but remains substantially intact.

The medal itself exhibits considerable original character, with age-related toning, oxidation, finish loss and wear to the high points. The portrait shows noticeable surface wear, while the wreath and cross retain good definition. The suspension ring and connecting hardware are present.

An attractive and recognizable piece of Imperial Austro-Hungarian military and Habsburg history, particularly desirable with its period-style triangular ribbon intact. It would make an excellent addition to a WWI, Austro-Hungarian, Imperial Austrian or European medal collection.
