Austria-Hungarian Franz Joseph I Military Merit Medal-“Signum Laudis” -Imperial Austria

Original Austro-Hungarian Military Merit Medal, commonly known as the “Signum Laudis”, dating to the reign of Emperor Franz Joseph I. This Imperial Austrian decoration was instituted in 1890 and awarded to officers and equivalent-ranking officials in recognition of distinguished military service. 

The obverse features the right-facing portrait of Emperor Franz Joseph I surrounded by his imperial titles. The reverse carries the famous “SIGNUM LAUDIS” inscription, Latin for “Sign of Praise,” surrounded by a laurel and oak wreath. 

This example retains its traditional Austrian triangular-fold red ribbon. The plain red ribbon was used for the peacetime/service version of the award, while wartime awards were worn from the striped Bravery Medal ribbon.  The ribbon appears period and shows expected age and wear.

The medal itself displays considerable honest age, patina, surface wear and loss of its original finish, particularly across the portrait and reverse. Despite the wear, the Franz Joseph portrait, surrounding lettering and portions of the reverse inscription remain identifiable. The suspension hardware is present and the ribbon remains attached. We have made no attempt to clean or polish the medal.

A genuine Imperial Austro-Hungarian decoration from the final decades of the Habsburg monarchy and an attractive piece for an Imperial Austrian, Austro-Hungarian, WWI-era, European medal or military history collection.

Condition: Good original relic condition with substantial age-related wear, patina and finish loss as photographed. Ribbon shows age and handling wear. Please examine photographs closely as they form an important part of the condition description.
