Brief History

The original military rifle is the Polish wz. 88 Tantal (karabinek wzór 1988), a 5.45×39mm assault rifle developed in the 1980s at the OBR institute in Radom as Poland’s answer to the Soviet AK-74. Poland wanted better ballistics and lighter recoil than the 7.62×39mm AKM while avoiding restrictive Soviet licensing. Key distinctive features include:

Separate left-side fire selector (with 3-round burst on the military version) and right-side safety.

Distinctive side-folding wire stock (chosen partly for compatibility with existing vehicle/rack systems).

Elongated AK-74-style muzzle device designed for rifle grenades.

Production began around 1990–1991 at the Łucznik (Radom) factory; total output was limited (roughly 25,000–50,000). It was short-lived in Polish service and was replaced by the 5.56mm Beryl in the mid-to-late 1990s as Poland moved toward NATO standards.​

Guns

In the late 2000s (roughly 2007–2010 era), Century International Arms imported Polish Tantal parts kits (demilled military rifles) and assembled them in the U.S. as semi-automatic “Tantal Sporter” rifles. These used U.S.-made receivers (early ones often DC Industries; later ones, including yours, NoDak Spud) to comply with 922(r) parts-count rules, along with U.S. barrels, fire-control groups, and other compliant parts. Markings match yours exactly: Century Int’l Arms Inc / Tantal Sporter / Cal: 5.45x39 / NoDak Spud LLC / Edina MN. USA.​

Early production (especially TTL-prefix serials) had documented issues with incorrect barrel bore diameter/twist rates that caused keyholing with some surplus 5.45 ammo. Later Y-prefix rifles (including low ones like Y000067 and higher numbers starting around Y0020xx) generally used improved/correct 5.45 barrels (commonly 1:8 twist) and are regarded more favorably.
