The Colt Kodiak was a special, limited-edition revolver produced in 1993 by Colt's Custom Shop. It was essentially a modified version of the Colt Anaconda (Colt's big-bore .44 Magnum revolver introduced in 1990), but with distinctive upgrades for better recoil management and aesthetics:

Unfluted (smooth) cylinder — adding weight for reduced felt recoil.

Factory Magna-ported barrel — with ports near the muzzle to vent gases and control muzzle flip.

Stainless steel construction throughout.

Often fitted with Pachmayr grips.

Bear paw/footprint engraving or markings on the barrel.

Production was very limited: approximately 2,000 units total (some sources say around that number, with most in 6-inch barrels, though a few rarer 4-inch versions exist). This broke from Colt's tradition of naming revolvers after snakes (e.g., Anaconda, Python). It was designed as a powerful big-game hunting or backcountry protection sidearm, taming the stout .44 Magnum recoil better than standard models.

The original Kodiak was discontinued after this short run. In 2024, Colt reintroduced the Kodiak name as a modern variant of the updated Anaconda (reintroduced in 2021 with improvements like a Python-style leaf spring action). The new versions include unfluted cylinders, ported barrels, and options for 4.25-inch (most common) or 6-inch barrels in polished stainless steel, with Hogue overmolded grips. The modern 6-inch model shares the spirit of the original but benefits from refined manufacturing.

This Kodiak is a late 2024/ early 2025.
