Dexter Smith Single Shot 12 Gauge Shotgun – Antique Springfield Mass. Break Action

Early Dexter Smith single-shot break-action shotgun chambered in 12 gauge. Manufactured by Dexter Smith of Springfield, Massachusetts, with the barrel carrying the period patent markings “PAT. JAN. 18, 84 & OCT. 16, 77 FEB. 14 & MAR. 7, 72.” Features an exposed hammer, side-mounted opening lever, long round barrel, walnut forearm and straight-grip walnut stock.

The shotgun remains functional and is in good condition considering its considerable age. Metal surfaces have developed an even gray/brown patina with scattered age-related spotting and wear. Wood remains attractive with typical handling marks and age-related wear. A neat early American utility shotgun with an unusual action and plenty of late-19th-century character.
