EARLY MEDAL OF HONOR Original General Order— PENNSYLVANIA HERO (ANTIETAM)
War Department, Washington, D.C. — 1863
Original framed Civil War General Orders No. 160, dated May 30, 1863, announcing the award of the Medal of Honor to:
Private Samuel Johnson
Company G, 9th Pennsylvania Reserves
One of the earliest Medal of Honor recipients, recognized for individual bravery and daring in personally capturing two Confederate colors during the Battle of Antietam, September 17, 1862. Johnson was severely wounded in the act.
Issued during the earliest period of the Medal of Honor—when the award was extremely rare and reserved for exceptional battlefield heroism—and signed in type by E. D. Townsend, Assistant Adjutant General, by order of the Secretary of War.
A Pennsylvania soldier with direct local significance to our region, making this an exceptional opportunity for collectors of PA history, Civil War heroism, and early Medal of Honor material.
Professionally framed with period-appropriate presentation.
Condition: Very good; crisp text, excellent eye appeal, and strong display presence.
