Description

Offered is an original French Model 1874 Gras sword bayonet, reportedly dated 1879, one of the most iconic military bayonets of the late 19th century.

Designed for use with the French Gras rifle, these bayonets saw widespread service throughout Europe, French colonial campaigns, and remained in use well into the early years of the 20th century. The design features a long steel blade, brass pommel, steel crossguard, and the distinctive hooked quillon that collectors immediately recognize as characteristic of the Gras pattern.

This example retains its original wood grip scales secured by rivets and exhibits an attractive untouched patina throughout. The blade shows age and service wear with scattered oxidation and dark finish from long-term storage. The brass pommel has developed a pleasing antique appearance, while the hooked quillon remains intact.

French Gras bayonets are highly collectible due to their historical significance, quality of manufacture, and connection to the transition from black powder to modern military firearms.
