French Second Republic Bronze Medallion-Dated: 20 Fevier 1848
French Second Republic Bronze Medallion-Dated: 20 Fevier 1848
An original French bronze medallion commemorating the founding of the Second French Republic following the Revolution of 1848. The obverse depicts the seated allegorical figure of Marianne, symbolizing the French Republic, holding a scepter and wreath while accompanied by the Gallic rooster, a long-standing emblem of France. Around the perimeter appears the inscription “RÉPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE,” with the commemorative date “20 FÉVR. 1848” below.
Unlike standard medals, this example retains a threaded mounting post on the reverse, indicating it originally served as a decorative furniture mount, architectural ornament, ceremonial fitting, or presentation piece. Such bronze mounts were commonly produced during the mid-to-late 19th century for government buildings, commemorative furnishings, and patriotic displays.
The medal displays an attractive aged bronze patina with honest wear consistent with age, making it an appealing display piece for collectors of French history, political memorabilia, decorative arts, and 19th-century European antiques.
