For sale is an exceptional and authentic WW2 German Afrika Korps field cap, a rare piece of history from the North African campaign (1941-1943). This M41 tropical field cap, manufactured by the renowned Winkelmann und Söhne, was worn by a member of a Panzer unit within the Deutsches Afrika Korps (DAK), as indicated by the yellow Soutache braid in an upside-down “V” over the cockade—a designation for Panzer troops, such as those in the 15th or 21st Panzer Divisions under Rommel.

Details and Condition:

• Exterior: The cap is constructed of period-correct khaki/tan cotton, designed for desert climates, with a soft bill, rounded crown, and side flaps. It features metal ventilation grommets on the sides, typical of Afrika Korps headgear. The fabric shows expected wear for a wartime item, including slight fading and minor fraying at the edges, but remains intact with no major tears or stains.
• Insignia: The front bears the standard Wehrmacht eagle and cockade (national colors: red, white, black). The yellow Panzer Soutache braid is correctly positioned over the cockade, adding to its rarity and historical value. The insignia show age-appropriate wear but are original and intact.
• Interior: The reddish-brown cotton lining is stamped with “Winkelmann und Söhne” and the size “57” (57 cm head circumference), confirming its authenticity as a wartime production piece. The lining and stitching are consistent with originals, with no signs of modern reproduction (e.g., synthetic materials or incorrect fonts).

Historical Context:The Afrika Korps field cap was a utilitarian piece of headgear issued to German troops in North Africa, designed for the harsh desert environment. The yellow Soutache identifies this cap as belonging to a Panzer unit, making it a rare variant highly sought after by collectors of DAK or Panzer memorabilia. Winkelmann und Söhne was a well-known manufacturer of Wehrmacht headgear, and their stamp is a hallmark of authenticity.

Collector’s Note:This cap has been carefully examined and is believed to be 90–95% likely an original piece, based on its manufacturer stamp, materials, construction, and Panzer Soutache. It’s in very good condition for its age, with all elements (insignia, lining, and exterior) showing consistent wear. Perfect for serious collectors of WW2 German militaria, especially those focused on the Afrika Korps or Panzer units.
