German I.A. Kuppscher Hammer Drilling – 16 Gauge x 16 Gauge / Rifle – Underlever Combination Gun

German-made I.A. Kuppscher drilling featuring two 16-gauge shotgun barrels over a centerfire rifle barrel. The exact rifle chambering has not been positively confirmed; it is believed to be approximately .43 Mauser and should be verified by chamber cast before firing or representing it as a specific caliber.

This is an attractive early hammer-fired combination gun with an underlever action, double exposed hammers, double triggers, rifle-barrel selector, checkered walnut stock and forearm, sling swivels, and extensive period engraving across the locks, action, hammers, lever and barrel rib. The barrels are marked “Gewehr Lauf Stahl,” indicating rifle/barrel steel rather than a model designation. German proof and inspection markings are visible beneath the barrels.

Overall the gun is complete and presents very well for its age. Metal surfaces retain an attractive aged gray/brown patina with scattered finish loss, oxidation and normal handling wear. The walnut remains solid and attractive with age-appropriate handling marks and strong checkering. Both shotgun firing pins are functional. The firing pin serving the rifle barrel is broken and will require repair. Rifle caliber has not been confirmed. Sold accordingly.

A very attractive late-19th/early-20th-century German drilling with considerably more character than the later hammerless utility drillings. The exposed hammers, underlever action, engraving and rifle/shotgun configuration make it a particularly nice display or collecting piece.
