Japanese Arisaka Type 99 7.7mm – Intact Mum – Sporterized WWII Rifle
Japanese Arisaka Type 99 7.7mm – Intact Mum – Sporterized WWII Rifle
Japanese Arisaka Type 99 bolt-action rifle chambered in 7.7 Japanese, manufactured as a Japanese military service rifle during WWII. Most notably, the receiver retains its intact Imperial Chrysanthemum (“mum”), an important and desirable original military marking that was frequently ground or defaced on surrendered rifles.
This example has been sporterized, so it should be marketed as an affordable intact-mum Type 99 rather than as an original military configuration rifle. The original stock has been substantially shortened and reshaped into a sporting configuration, including removal of the military upper handguard and much of the forward stock. The sights have also been replaced/modified from their original military configuration.
The metal is in surprisingly clean condition for a WWII Japanese rifle, retaining an attractive dark finish with comparatively limited corrosion visible. The receiver markings, including the mum and Japanese Type 99 markings, remain clearly visible. Bolt action appears complete, and the rifle retains a leather sling.
The intact mum gives this rifle considerably more historical interest than the typical heavily altered Arisaka, although the extensive sporterization substantially limits its collector value compared with an original Type 99.
