Large Handmade Bowie Knife-AFO Marked-Full Tang-Brass Guard

This impressive handmade Bowie-style hunting knife is a heavy-duty field knife built for serious outdoor use. Featuring a thick carbon steel clip-point blade, solid brass crossguard, and full-tang construction with hardwood slab scales, this knife exhibits the quality and craftsmanship associated with custom or small-shop makers.

The blade bears an “AFO” stamp along with additional worn markings and numbers that have not been positively identified. While the exact maker remains unknown, the knife’s construction strongly suggests it was produced by an individual bladesmith or small custom shop rather than a large commercial manufacturer. Extensive examination has not matched the stamp to any known major production knife maker. Searches for “AFO” primarily return the modern Benchmade AFO automatic knife, which is an entirely different folding knife and unrelated to this fixed-blade example.  

The knife features a substantial full-width tang visible through the handle, a hand-fitted brass guard, and attractive hardwood scales secured with large cutler’s rivets. The carbon steel blade has developed an honest working patina while retaining a strong cutting edge, giving it the appearance of a knife that was built to be used rather than displayed.

Condition

Very good vintage condition. The blade shows an attractive aged patina, light scratches, and normal wear consistent with age and use. The edge is sharp, the handle is tight, and the brass guard is secure. No cracks or looseness noted in the handle. Please review all photos for the best representation of condition.
