Brief History

Daniel Myron “Uncle Dan” Lefever (1835–1906) was a pioneering American gunsmith best known for developing one of the first commercially successful hammerless double-barreled shotguns in the United States. After earlier partnerships, the Lefever Arms Company was established in Syracuse, New York, around 1883–1884 to produce his innovative designs.

Key features of Lefever guns included a ball-and-socket hinge joint that allowed easy adjustment for wear, cocking indicators, an adjustable top fastener, and a concealed forend release. The company built high-quality sideplate (semi-sidelock appearance) hammerless shotguns until 1916, when it was sold to Ithaca Gun Company. Ithaca continued limited production of Lefever-branded guns using remaining parts into the early 1920s.

The G Grade (also called Ideal Grade) was introduced around 1892 and remained in production until the end of Syracuse-era manufacturing. It was the utility/entry-level model and the biggest seller in the Lefever lineup. Early catalogs listed it at about $75. Typical features included:

Damascus (or later Royal/black steel) barrels

English walnut stock with full pistol grip and rubber/hard-rubber grip cap and buttplate

Checkering

Line engraving (later examples often had more scroll work)

Full compensated action

Ejectors (automatic shell ejection) became available as an option starting in the mid-1890s (roughly from serial numbers in the 17,000s onward). While more common on higher grades (F and above), they appear on G Grades, especially later production guns.
