Leni Riefenstahl Signed Display w/ 1972 Receipt- WWII German Filmmaker/Olympia Director

Framed historical display relating to Leni Riefenstahl (1902–2003), the German filmmaker and photographer best known for directing Triumph of the Will and Olympia, two of the most famous and controversial documentary films of the Third Reich era.

The display contains a cut signature reading “Leni Riefenstahl”, mounted above an original German receipt dated September 30, 1972.

The typed receipt is headed “Quittung” and reads in part:

“für Auslagen im Monat September von Frau Riefenstahl erhalten — DM 40.—”

This translates approximately to:

“Receipt for expenses in the month of September, received from Mrs. Riefenstahl — 40 Deutsche Marks.”

The document bears an additional handwritten signature at lower right, apparently acknowledging receipt of the payment.

Also incorporated into the display is a PBS promotional photograph for the documentary “The Wonderful, Horrible Life of Leni Riefenstahl,” showing Riefenstahl both as a young woman and later in life working with a film camera.

Riefenstahl achieved international fame for her pioneering cinematography and large-scale filmmaking techniques. Her 1935 film Triumph of the Will documented the Nazi Party rally at Nuremberg, while her two-part Olympia documented the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games. Although her technical influence on filmmaking remains significant, her close association with Adolf Hitler and the Nazi regime made her one of the most controversial figures in 20th-century cinema.

The signature appears consistent with known examples of Riefenstahl’s handwriting, but no third-party authentication is presently indicated. The receipt is especially interesting because it appears to be an original piece of personal/business correspondence directly involving Riefenstahl rather than merely a later autograph obtained by a collector.

Professionally framed and matted as shown. Some age toning and light spotting are visible to the paper and matting, consistent with age.
