Original WWII German Luftwaffe Fallschirmjäger Paratrooper Badge – G.H. Osang Dresden

Original WWII German Luftwaffe Fallschirmschützenabzeichen, commonly known as the Luftwaffe Paratrooper or Fallschirmjäger Badge, manufactured by G.H. Osang of Dresden.

Instituted in 1936, the badge was awarded to Luftwaffe personnel who successfully completed the required parachute training and qualifying jumps. The design features a diving eagle clutching a swastika mounted over an oval wreath of oak and laurel leaves.

This example is clearly maker marked “G.H. OSANG / DRESDEN” on the reverse of the eagle. It exhibits the expected multi-piece construction with the eagle separately riveted to the wreath. Both rivets remain present, along with the original-style hinge, vertical pin and catch assembly. Ratisbon’s documents essentially the same Osang construction, including zinc examples with the maker mark on the reverse of the eagle and both original rivets. 

The badge retains excellent detail throughout the eagle’s wings, feathers, head and talons, as well as the oak and laurel wreath. The surfaces have developed an attractive, naturally aged appearance with much of the original finish having mellowed over time. The reverse displays appropriate age and handling wear.

Overall, this is a very attractive example of one of the most recognizable Luftwaffe qualification badges of WWII and a desirable maker-marked piece for a Fallschirmjäger, Luftwaffe or German airborne collection.
