Marlin 1893 38-55 (1896 mfg date) Antique!

The Marlin Model 1893 is a classic lever-action repeating rifle introduced by the Marlin Firearms Company in 1893 as an evolution of the earlier Model 1889. It was designed for smokeless powder cartridges, featuring a solid-top receiver with side ejection to prevent interference with scopes or sights, and a locking block for improved safety and reliability. The .38-55 Winchester Center Fire (WCF) chambering was one of the most popular options, a black powder-era cartridge (though later adapted for smokeless loads) known for its mild recoil and effectiveness for deer hunting or target shooting at moderate ranges (effective up to about 200 yards). This caliber uses a .379-inch bullet, typically 255 grains, with muzzle velocities around 1,300-1,400 fps from a 24-26" barrel.

A "Deluxe Special Order" refers to factory-customized variants ordered directly from Marlin with premium features. These were not mass-produced but tailored for discerning buyers, often including high-grade walnut wood, checkering, engraving, extended barrels, half-length magazines, takedown mechanisms, or specialized sights. Production of special orders peaked in the late 1890s to early 1900s, with serial numbers typically in the 100,000-400,000 range corresponding to manufacture dates from 1895-1905. As antiques (pre-1899 examples qualify under U.S. ATF rules), they require no FFL for transfer.
