Mossberg 500B 16ga

The Mossberg 500B is a 16-gauge variant of the iconic Mossberg 500 pump-action shotgun series. The standard Mossberg 500 was introduced in 1961 (initially in 12 gauge), with 16-gauge versions added in 1963. The "B" designation specifically refers to the 16-gauge model in early production nomenclature.

Production of the 500B (16 gauge) ran from around 1963 into the late 1960s (some sources cite up to 1969), though it was relatively short-lived and is now considered somewhat rare compared to the more common 12-gauge models. The overall Mossberg 500 line has been in continuous production since 1961, with over 11 million units made across variants, but the dedicated 16-gauge 500B was discontinued early on.

Mossberg serial numbers for the 500 series are typically a letter prefix followed by 5-6 digits (e.g., letter + numbers).

The "B" prefix aligns with the model designation (500B for 16 gauge), and this format was used on some early serialized examples.

Federal law (Gun Control Act of 1968) did not require serial numbers on long guns like shotguns until 1968. Many pre-1968 Mossberg 500s (including 500B models) have no serial number at all, or very low/simple ones if present.
