This is an original and highly collectible Freiwilliger Arbeitsdienst (FAD) service-time identification booklet issued in 1935 to a German volunteer labor service member. The booklet predates the fully developed wartime labor service system and documents service performed before December 15, 1933, making it an especially desirable early Third Reich-era document.

The cover is titled:

“Dienstzeit-Ausweis für Arbeitsdienstwillige, die vor dem 15.12.1933 dem Arbeitsdienst angehörten”

(“Service Time Identification Card for Labor Service Volunteers Who Belonged to the Labor Service Prior to December 15, 1933.”)

The booklet remains complete and contains:

  • Original owner’s photograph
  • Multiple official Berlin labor service stamps
  • Named recipient information
  • Service details and labor camp entry
  • Official issue number
  • Original signatures and endorsements
  • Early labor service insignia featuring the spade emblem

The identified holder is Gerhard Martin Hermann, born in Berlin in 1915, with service documented from 11 April 1933 through 5 July 1933 at an Arbeitsdienstlager (labor service camp). The booklet was officially issued in Berlin on June 18, 1935.

Historically, the Freiwilliger Arbeitsdienst was one of the organizations that evolved into the later Reich Labor Service (RAD). Documents from this transitional period are considerably scarcer than later wartime RAD paperwork and provide an important glimpse into Germany’s labor service programs during the early years of the National Socialist government.

Condition

Very good original condition with expected age toning, handling wear, punched filing holes, and minor edge wear. Photograph remains firmly attached and official stamps are clear and legible. The booklet displays exceptionally well and retains strong historical appeal.
