Original 1948 German Denazification Amnesty Certificate-Allied Occupation Document of Johann Ebenbeck
Original 1948 German Denazification Amnesty Certificate-Allied Occupation Document of Johann Ebenbeck
Offered is an original 1948 German Denazification (Spruchkammer) Certificate issued during the Allied occupation of Germany following the end of World War II.
Following Germany’s surrender in 1945, the Allied occupation authorities established Spruchkammern (Denazification Courts) to investigate millions of German citizens and determine their level of involvement with the National Socialist regime. Each individual was reviewed under the Law for the Liberation from National Socialism and Militarism, enacted on 5 March 1946.
This original document was issued to:
Johann Ebenbeck
Born: 10 October 1893
The certificate states that, based upon the information contained in his official registration questionnaire, Johann Ebenbeck was determined to be “nicht betroffen” (“not affected”) under the denazification law. In other words, the reviewing authorities concluded that he was not subject to denazification penalties or sanctions under the applicable legislation.
The document is dated 19 February 1948 and bears the signature of the Public Prosecutor (Öffentlicher Kläger) assigned to the Spruchkammer proceedings. It was later officially certified as a true copy on 20 August 1948 and carries a clear Postamt Bogen postal authority certification stamp.
The reverse contains original administrative processing notes documenting the final review of the case. These notes indicate that the police report had been reviewed, the authorities agreed with the tribunal’s decision, and the file was subsequently ordered closed and archived in September 1948.
Historical Significance
Denazification records represent one of the most important administrative efforts of the Allied occupation. Every adult German was required to account for their activities during the Third Reich, and millions of cases were reviewed by Spruchkammer tribunals throughout occupied Germany.
This document provides a tangible record of that process, documenting an official determination that the recipient was not affected by the denazification law and preserving the administrative record of the case through its final closure.
Original Spruchkammer documents are increasingly sought after by collectors of WWII, Allied Occupation, and postwar German historical material because they illustrate the transition from Nazi Germany to Allied civil administration.
Condition
Original period document showing expected fold lines, age toning, and light handling wear consistent with its age. Official signatures, certification markings, and the Postamt Bogen ink stamp remain sharp and well preserved. The reverse retains original administrative annotations documenting the final disposition of the case.
A scarce and historically significant occupation-era judicial document representing an important chapter in postwar German history.
