Original German WWII Inert 5cm Mortar Round – Leichter Granatwerfer 36 (December 1939)

Manufactured in December 1939, as indicated by the clear "12.1939" marking, this high-explosive (HE) anti-personnel round was produced at the dawn of the war, likely intended for use in early campaigns such as the Battle of France in 1940. The 5cm leGrW 36 was a light mortar developed by Rheinmetall-Borsig and introduced in 1936, intended to provide infantry units with a portable, long-range alternative to hand grenades.

This mortar round features its original orange paint, a hallmark of German ordnance from the period, though it shows natural signs of age with rust and corrosion, adding to its historical character. The body is marked with "DL 622" and "1166," likely indicating the factory code and batch number, offering a glimpse into its production history. The round’s design includes a screw-threaded fuze hole at the nose, which would have originally housed a Wgr.
