Original WWI Imperial German 1914 Iron Cross 1st Class – 800 Silver Screwback – Three-Piece Construction
Original WWI Imperial German 1914 Iron Cross 1st Class – 800 Silver Screwback – Three-Piece Construction
Original Imperial German 1914 Iron Cross 1st Class (Eisernes Kreuz 1. Klasse) featuring the desirable screwback attachment system and traditional three-piece construction.
The obverse features the classic 1914 Iron Cross design with the Imperial crown at the top, a raised “W” for Kaiser Wilhelm II at center, and “1914” at the bottom. The blackened iron core is surrounded by a silver-colored ribbed frame, displaying the traditional construction associated with quality period examples.
This example utilizes a screwback mounting system rather than the more commonly encountered pin-and-catch arrangement. The circular screw plate is clearly stamped “800,” denoting 800-fineness silver. Screwback Iron Crosses were privately purchased variations and are especially popular with collectors because of their distinctive construction and relatively limited availability compared with conventional pinback examples.
The cross displays attractive honest age and patina throughout. Much of the original dark finish remains on the iron core, while the silver frame has developed an appealing aged appearance. The reverse exhibits expected wear and oxidation consistent with age. The screw post, retaining plate and locking hardware remain present.
A very attractive and desirable variation of the WWI German Iron Cross 1st Class, combining three-piece construction, an 800 silver-marked screwback assembly, and excellent overall presentation.
