Original WWII German HRE 1-Liter Gebirgsjager Labeflasche Canteen w/ Felt Cover and Strap-“Medical Mountain/Gebirgsjager”-Named “Rehelt”- “HRE 40”
Original WWII German large-capacity 1-liter Labeflasche field canteen, a scarce variation associated with Gebirgsjäger mountain troops. Constructed with an aluminum flask, brown wool felt insulating cover, leather retaining fittings and detachable leather shoulder strap with period metal spring clips.
The screw cap is clearly maker/date marked HRE 40, indicating 1940 production. The cap also bears an old hand-scratched inscription or ownership marking. The aluminum flask remains very clean overall with typical light handling marks and minor deformation. The brown felt cover remains unusually complete and retains its fastening hardware.
Of particular interest is the surviving long leather carrying strap and metal attachment hardware. The leather shows expected wartime and age-related wear including dryness, surface cracking, edge wear and deterioration to portions of the stitching, but remains substantially intact. The metal attachment hardware retains aged finish and visible manufacturer-type markings.
These larger 1-liter Labeflaschen were issued in configurations associated with German mountain and medical personnel and are substantially less common than the standard .8-liter M31 Feldflasche. The surviving shoulder-strap arrangement on this example is consistent with the Gebirgsjäger-style configuration documented by collectors.
