Original WWII German Wehrmacht Dog Tag – 2nd Battery Light Artillery Replacement Battalion 239

Original WWII German Wehrmacht Erkennungsmarke (identification tag/dog tag) issued to a soldier serving with the 2nd Battery, leichte Artillerie-Ersatz-Abteilung 239 — the 239th Light Artillery Replacement Battalion.

The unit abbreviation identifies 2. Batterie / leichte Artillerie-Ersatz-Abteilung 239, while “A” indicates the soldier’s blood group and 2373 is the individual identification/roll number. An independently documented surviving tag from this exact unit uses essentially the same “2.L.Art.Ers.Abt.239” marking. 

Artillerie-Ersatz-Abteilung 239 was formed at Neisse in Wehrkreis VIII on August 26, 1939, immediately before the outbreak of WWII. The replacement unit supplied personnel to Artillerie-Regiment 239, associated with the 239th Infantry Division. The original replacement battalion was short-lived and was dissolved in October 1939, making this an interesting early-war identification tag. 

The tag is the standard oval German military pattern with three horizontal break slots and suspension holes. Importantly, it remains uncut/unbroken, meaning both halves are still together. The markings remain strong and easily readable, with an attractive naturally aged surface and normal handling wear.
