This is a stunning example of a Lee-Enfield No. 4 Mk II rifle from the UF55 production series, manufactured in 1955 at the Royal Ordnance Factory (ROF) Fazakerley in Liverpool, England. The "UF55" prefix on the receiver (visible in the markings as "No4 Mk2 UF55 A17831") indicates it was part of a late post-war batch of approximately 20,000 rifles produced specifically under contract for the Royal Air Force (RAF), marking the end of standard-issue Lee-Enfield rifle production in Britain before the shift to semi-automatic designs like the L1A1.cdd4585cd49e327523 These were among the final "new-build" No. 4 Mk II rifles, featuring improvements over earlier wartime models, such as a wooden buttstock with a cut for the magazine (to prevent interference during reloading), a redesigned bolt with a knobbed handle for easier operation, and a high-lustre blued finish on the metal components.53b185c00ed9
The rifle's unissued condition is evident from the pristine, glossy beech furniture, the untouched cosmoline preservative residue, and the lack of handling marks or bore wear. These UF55 rifles were stored in "mummy-wrapped" packaging—grease-sealed paper and wax coatings—for long-term preservation, and many remained unissued even after production, as the RAF transitioned away from bolt-action rifles shortly thereafter.42ce8b701533 The serial number A17831 falls within the documented range for this series, and the "A" suffix likely denotes a sub-batch.6e4654 Note the distinctive No. 4 Mk II features: the spiky rear sight, the Lee-Enfield's iconic 10-round detachable magazine, and the smooth-operating bolt with its rear-locking lugs.
As a collector's piece, this represents the "end of the line" for the legendary Lee-Enfield design, which served the British Commonwealth from the late 19th century through WWII and into the Cold War.
