Rock-Ola M1 Carbine

Rock-Ola began M1 Carbine production in early 1942 after receiving government contracts. The receivers (the main body of the rifle) were stamped simply "ROCK-OLA" or with the letter "R" as an identification code. The company not only assembled complete carbines but also manufactured many components in-house, such as stocks, handguards, barrels, and other machined parts. It even used its furniture machinery to produce wooden furniture for its own rifles and subcontracted for other contractors. Each complete Rock-Ola carbine cost the U.S. government an average of $58 to produce.

Production ran from 1942 to May 1944, when contracts were canceled as wartime demands shifted. Rock-Ola delivered a total of approximately 228,500 M1 Carbines, accounting for about 3.7% of the overall wartime output. Serial numbers for Rock-Ola carbines fall into several blocks, primarily ranging from 1,600,000 to 1,762,xxx and 4,000,000 to 4,495,xxx, with later blocks like 5,600,000-5,800,000 produced in early 1944. The company also created around 60 "presentation" carbines—specially engraved or unmarked examples gifted to executives and officials—as morale boosters or commemorations.

Use in Service and Post-War Legacy

Rock-Ola M1 Carbines saw extensive combat use during World War II, primarily with U.S. forces in Europe and the Pacific theaters. They were issued to non-combat roles like artillerymen, tank crews, and officers, but also proved popular with infantry for their light weight and reliability. The design's simplicity allowed for rapid production across contractors, though parts interchangeability was a hallmark of the program. Post-war, surplus Rock-Ola carbines were distributed worldwide, including to allies like South Korea and South Vietnam, where they served in the Korean and Vietnam Wars.
