The Ruger M77 Hawkeye in .204 Ruger is a third-generation evolution of Ruger’s classic Model 77 bolt-action hunting rifle, chambered for a high-velocity varmint cartridge that Ruger co-developed with Hornady.
History of the M77 / Hawkeye Line
Ruger introduced the original Model 77 in 1968. Designed primarily by Jim Sullivan (with input from Bill Ruger and stockmaker Lenard Brownell), it filled a market gap left when Winchester dropped controlled-round-feed features on the Model 70. Key traits included a Mauser-style claw extractor, integral scope mounts on the receiver, investment-cast construction for cost efficiency, and a traditional walnut stock.
Original M77 (1968–late 1980s/early 1990s): Tang safety, push-feed action with claw extractor appearance.
M77 Mark II (introduced ~1989–1991): True controlled-round feed, three-position safety on the bolt, blade ejector, and other refinements. Production continued alongside later models for a time.
M77 Hawkeye (introduced 2006): Refinement of the Mark II with the improved LC6 trigger (lighter, smoother, easier to adjust), a slimmer/more rounded walnut stock with updated checkering, red rubber recoil pad, and steel floorplate. The receiver is marked “RUGER M77 HAWKEYE.” It retained the controlled-round feed, integral scope bases, cold hammer-forged barrel, and overall rugged design. Variants later expanded to include Predator, Hunter, Compact, Guide Gun, African, and others.
